A special commemorative event titled “July Revolution 2024 and an Egalitarian Bangladesh: Opportunities–Challenges–Solutions” was held at Jagannath University (JnU) to mark the July Revolution and the Milestone Tragedy. The program began with recitations from the Holy Qur’an and the Gita, followed by symbolic tributes including the wearing of black badges and a minute of silence to honor the martyred and injured.

The event took place on Sunday, July 27, at 10:00 AM in Room 504 of the Finance Department, Shahid Sajid Bhaban.

Presided over by Professor Dr. Mohammad Bayejid Ali, Chairman of the Finance Department, the program welcomed Professor Dr. Muhammad Manzur Murshed Bhuiyan, Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies, as the chief guest. Professor Dr. Mohammad Rahis Uddin, General Secretary of the JnU Teachers’ Association, attended as special guest. The event was conducted by Professor Dr. Mohammad Omar Faruk, who also coordinated several segments of the program. Faculty members and students of the Finance Department were present.

Participants wore black armbands as a mark of respect for the victims of the revolution and tragedy. The multifaceted program included essay presentations, personal reflections, poetry recitations, and open discussions involving both teachers and students. The keynote essay was delivered by Dr. Omar Faruk, followed by student speeches aligned with the central theme.

Several students who had actively participated in the July movement shared their firsthand experiences, while others recited poetry that resonated with the spirit of resistance and sacrifice. Speakers reflected on the achievements and ongoing challenges emerging from the revolution, as well as the roles and responsibilities of the academic community.

In his address, Professor Dr. Mohammad Rahis Uddin stated, “The July Revolution was born out of the spontaneous participation of anti-fascist teachers and students. It remains a historic event that will inspire future generations to rise against injustice.”

Professor Dr. Muhammad Manzur Murshed Bhuiyan added a note of caution in his speech: “If the current division among the fighters of July continues, it may lead to another historical tragedy. Just as the revolutionaries of the Sepoy Mutiny were hanged in Bahadur Shah Park, history might witness the creation of a new such park.”

As part of the event, a visual art exhibition was inaugurated, portraying powerful moments from the July movement through evocative imagery.

The program concluded with a prayer session led by Professor Dr. Omar Faruk in memory of those who were injured or martyred during the July Revolution and Milestone Tragedy.
