Aspiring young photographer Sahnía Faham inaugurated her highly anticipated photography exhibition, “The View from My Window”, at Gallery Illusion in Lalmatia, Dhaka, on August 16. The exhibition, curated under the guidance of celebrated photographer Shah Mohammad Sajjad Hossain, will remain open to the public until August 20.

The opening ceremony was graced by Mohammad Khalid Hasan, Senior Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, as the chief guest. In his address, he encouraged young artists to create meaningful work that inspires change, emphasizing that art is not merely an aesthetic pursuit; it holds the power to transform society. Supporting art is therefore essential.

The exhibition presents a year-long photographic documentary in which Faham explores her personal interactions with her family’s domestic worker and the intimate moments of daily life. Through her lens, she challenges entrenched social hierarchies, occupational discrimination, and highlights the depth of human connection.

Faham, a student at Aga Khan Academy, Dhaka, remarked, “We often talk about changing society, yet we resist change within ourselves. True transformation begins with individual action. My work is a reminder of that.”

She added, “Lower-income workers are frequently defined solely by their occupation. Through these intimate portraits, I wanted to reveal their humanity. They, too, have dreams, resilience, and joy. The only difference is opportunity and circumstance.”

Faham acknowledged the influence of her upbringing, stating, My family taught me to treat everyone with respect, which helped me break the barriers of social class. I want others to see people in the same light. Photography often confines the lower-income community to images of hardship; I aimed to show their strength and optimism.

The View from My Window will be open daily from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm at Gallery Illusion. The organizers hope the exhibition will inspire visitors to move beyond preconceived notions, forget social hierarchies, and view people with renewed empathy and understanding.
