Frank Caprio, the retired municipal judge from Rhode Island whose compassion and humour in the courtroom made him a global icon through the reality series Caught in Providence, has died at the age of 88.
According to a statement on his verified Facebook page, Caprio “passed away peacefully” on Tuesday (August 20) after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Known for his empathy and fairness, Judge Caprio earned international admiration by blending justice with humanity. His unique approach often saw him dismissing tickets or reducing fines with humour and compassion, touching the lives of millions.

Just a week before his passing, Caprio had posted a video on Facebook saying he had suffered “a setback” and was back in the hospital, asking supporters to “remember me in your prayers.
Caught in Providence, filmed in his Providence courtroom, became a global phenomenon, drawing millions of viewers and amassing over a billion views across social media platforms.
Caprio’s legacy lives on as a symbol of justice delivered with kindness- reminding the world that the law can also be deeply humane.
