Dhaka, Aug 23 – Veteran journalist and founding editor of the Bangladeshi daily Naya Diganta, Alamgir Mohiuddin, has passed away at the age of 83. He breathed his last at Anwar Khan Modern Hospital in Dhaka on Saturday around 1:30 pm.
He was laid to rest at the capital’s Rayerbazar Graveyard after his Janaza prayer, which was held at Manipuripara Krishi Laboratories Mosque in Farmgate on Saturday night.
Confirming his death, National Press Club General Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan said, “Alamgir Mohiuddin fell ill at his residence last week and was admitted to the hospital shortly after.”
Family sources said Mohiuddin was first admitted to Anwar Khan Modern Hospital on May 30 after a sudden illness. Though his condition improved slightly, he was later readmitted following a relapse last week, where he ultimately passed away. His relatives added that in his final days, he had lost the ability to speak and move.
Doctors reported that he had been suffering from electrolyte imbalances, along with complications in urination, breathing, and fluctuating blood pressure. “The levels of essential minerals like sodium, chlorine, calcium, magnesium, and potassium were unstable,” they said.
Expressing deep sorrow, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said, “Alamgir Mohiuddin played a crucial role in presenting news with fairness. He dedicated his life to the struggle for democracy, freedom of speech, and human rights. His passing is a profound loss.”
Born on March 1, 1942, in Natore, Alamgir Mohiuddin completed his schooling at Chanchakair Nazimuddin High School and later studied at Rajshahi College. He earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Rajshahi University.
In his personal life, he is survived by two daughters, the elder of whom lives in Canada. His wife passed away four years ago.
Mohiuddin began his career as a journalist at Bangladesh Times, where he served as news editor, and later worked as editor of the English daily The New Nation. In 2004, he became the founding editor of Naya Diganta, published under Diganta Media Corporation Ltd. He also served on the Board of Directors of the state-owned news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
During the Awami League government, Mohiuddin and his newspaper faced repeated suppression. Following his death, Bangladesh’s media fraternity has been plunged into mourning over the loss of one of the country’s most respected journalists.
