Allegations have surfaced against Professor Dr. Md. Sheikh Gias Uddin, Registrar of Jagannath University (JnU), for misbehaving with journalists when asked about the Jagannath University Students’ Union (JnUSU) election.
On Thursday (31 July), two journalists reported being subjected to unprofessional behavior when they approached the registrar at the university’s administrative building to inquire about the long-pending JnUSU election.
Journalist Atik Mesbah Lagnu said, “As a journalist, I simply asked about the JnUSU election. But I was hurt by the registrar sir’s behavior.”
Rakibul Islam, a correspondent for the national daily Amader Shomoy, echoed similar concerns, stating, “Registrar sir told us, ‘I am not the member secretary of the JnUSU policy committee. I’m just a general member. I know nothing.’”
The registrar reportedly expressed his unwillingness to entertain any further questions from the journalists.
Despite repeated attempts to contact Professor Dr. Md. Sheikh Gias Uddin for a comment, no response was received.
Just a day prior, on Wednesday (30 July), general students at JnU formed a human chain on campus, demanding a roadmap for the JnUSU election. Leaders and activists from various student organizations joined the protest and issued an ultimatum to the university authorities to announce the election schedule within two working days.
According to university sources, the absence of a provision for a student parliament in the Jagannath University Act 2005 is the primary reason no JnUSU election has been held since the university’s founding.
However, for the first time, a draft policy regarding JnUSU was presented at the university’s 99th Syndicate meeting held earlier this year. Following the syndicate’s instructions, a five-member policy formulation committee was formed, led by the university’s Treasurer, Professor Dr. Sabina Sharmin. Sources indicate that the committee has already finalized the draft policy.
